Teachers' Day...

..came ... and went ... and nothing happened...!
Where were the celebrations?? We didn't even have the day off in college..! Maybe its not that shocking .. but I had forgotten that we don't get a holiday for Teachers' Day and was really getting excited about finally getting a holiday! :P
In school, we used to start practicing for the program several days in advance. It would be the class 9 students who organised a major part of the event - taking charge of the entire senior section – apart from class 10s who had their own special contribution. During our time in class 9, we chose the theme "Julius Caesar", which after all the twists and turns, became "Shakespeare in India" - a play that had all the characters of Julius Caesar, plus Kalidas, Shakuntala and Jankinath a.k.a. Jackey a.k.a. Trinaa !! The twist involved Brutus and Caesar falling in love with Shakuntala who was in love with Jackey, Calpurnia eloping with Marc Antony (played by yours truly), and Caesar waking from the dead and delivering killer Devdas dialogs. Some other 'killer' parts were: "Yes! My best friend, Julius Caesar!!" - Brutus' line inspired by the famous 'Friendly Wash Detergent' ad. (Do you remember it?)... and Calpurnia singing "Radha kaise na jale" on getting whiff of Caesar's love for Shakuntala.
Now that I think about it, it was almost a Bollywood masala flick with generous doses of heroes, heroines, love, jealousy, villains, wars, songs, 'inspirations' and awesomistic dialogs.

The spirit during that phase is truly memorable... - theme discussions. ideas. twists. actors. songs. dances. costumes. announcements. money. gifts. shorter classes. zero periods. the shed (the ultimate practise place). hushing up if we saw a teacher. whispering ideas when a teacher was around. fooling around. coming to school on off days for practice. dress rehearsals. staying back for decorating the hall. staff room. practice. practice. and more practice. things still messed up on the final day.... sigh .. how I missed all of this and much more...
oh wonderful school days ... I miss you ..!!

i still think that we should have taken a video of the whole play but anyway it is all there in our minds and hearts!
we had a celebation here in college that was abt student teacher relationship n all but nothin can get better than wat we had done even for watever imperfections it had(though i cant think of any!)..gr8 fun, the function was constantly reminding me of our school days...
Thanks heer..

i like SO agree with u. it was weird to see the teachers leave the (very meager and shoddily put together, i admit, but in my college we're always competing with deadlines) function halfway through to take classes. CLASSES, i ask you! on teacher's day.
sigh. i wanna go back to school. growing up doesn't suit me at all!
and btw, the play sounds really funny :)

HP said...

@ peter: yup. and people act so astonished if you show enthusiasm ! - weird!

@pseudo intellectual: first of all, i LOVE your name ;)

..they actually do that??!! :O ..and its sad but funny that people actually attend classes instead of participating in the function, or just taking a day off and staying home, dont you think?
yep, growing old doesnt suit me either. and the PLAY .. was..is..will remain..the best! [for us anyway ;)]
