Ho! Ho! Ho!

What did Santa give you?

He gave me a sleepy friend.

So now i have her laptop all to myself.

And that's a perfect gift for an addict like me.

The best things in life are free. :))

Re: Award Ceremony

Yes, i'm a dimwit. I am.

I somehow managed to miss out on reading the description of the award on Vinisha's blog - which lead to all the confusion...and selfishness..with me keeping the award for myself. Not that i'm not selfish otherwise..but since i have the excuse of being stupid, i'll use it.

SO... here's the description!

"Blogs that receive this award are 'exceeding charming'. This blog invests and believes in the PROXIMITY-nearness in space, time and relationships. These blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in prizes or self-aggrandizement! Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated."

Thanks a LOT, Vinisha! Means a lot to know i come across as friendly. Some people tell me i'm arrogant - which is ok..coz i am. But i'm improving, right? - All those who want to say 'no'.. go ahead and say it..so i'll know i have to work harder at pretending.

And i want to award Tinni, Mayuri, Farah, Lala, Urv, Pseudo Intellectual, Peter and Bhai with Chai.

[Proxi_award.jpg]

CONGRATULATIONS !!! :D

Sorry for the absolute dumb stupidity, people.

In my defence, Gandhiji once said, "Hate the stupidity, not the stupid." - Tathastu. :)

PS:
And to Abhinav. Because he was crying. :P

PS: Except for this kind of reality

I got awarded by Vinisha ! Thanks!
I'm supposed to pass it on to 8 other people. But, uh, i don't know what it says !! So I'm keeping it with myself. :P

Exams over!

Thanks god! .. or rather, Thank Gods!!

One full college-less month. Yayy! With friends, and family, and books, and quotes, and flickr and deviantArt, and my beloved camera. One full month of not letting go of the computer, of learning new things, and of (finally!) writing in my diary.

----------------------------
(Edited to cut the crap)

There has to be a way of getting out the mess we've created for ourselves. And we have to find that way...soon. Oh, and if we can manage to get over our ever abiding its-not-my-job attitude, maybe together we could go along that way too? Sound ok?

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Sometimes, friends forget.

They don't mean to. Heck, they don't even realise it! But they do. Learning to live without them is one option. Reaching out is an option too...

...and I'm a pro at it!

:D

And the CAT jumped over the moon

....ok! i know its 'cow' and not 'cat' that jumped over the moon.. i was just trying to make a dramatic comeback.

I was confident - having wasted my time getting addicted to facebook, google, blogs, comics and all the other stuff there on the internet - that i wouldn't do well, so kept telling mum not to worry. But meri baat to koi sunta hi nai hai! So she did worry.. and prayed.. and asked a whole lot of other people to pray for me too... They say faith in god can move the mountains. So i took a chance and attempted some maths questions. Turns out this god guy does exist. ;)

This may sound weird.. but I enjoyed taking this exam. Firstly, because the person who was supposed to sit beside me bunked it. And i had the whole bench to myself. hah! Secondly, because the English section was a lot of fun. At one point several people started staring at me coz... err.. i laughed aloud on reading a funny line in the comprehension passage. :P I do that a lot. Another fun thing was that in the morning, Tinni kept calling every 15 minutes or so and singing "Smelly Cat" - and better than Pheobe could ever sing! She's my favourite singer, you know. Tinni. Not Pheobe.

So, thanks for all the wishes people! It was fun. And having fun is more important than getting marks, right?

PS : Smelly cat didn't kill me. What a waste of bravery and holding-my-breath it would be if i survived cat only to be killed by Bhai with chai coz i changed the template.
Aye Chhotu, 2 chai!

Thanks a lot guys! I needed cheering up coz smelly-CAT is just a week away.
Thanks! :D :D

PS: All the best to everyone taking that stinky exam this year....and don't forget to wish me!
see yall on the other side...err...if the smell doesn't suffocate me.

The internet. I'm addicted :P

14. If you have faults, would you rather the people around you point them out to you or would you rather they keep quiet?

I have no idea about either. So... 42!! Douglas Adams must be SO proud of me! :P

Hope Diwali was safe, fun and fattening for you!

X and Y

If you think I'm a nice guy... you're wrong! I'm a nice girl ! That's right... I have two X-chromosomes. Oye u...yes u only! Kindly wipe that shocked expression off your face. :-\

Somehow people have had trouble believing this for as long as I can remember. I have vivid memory of the time when I'd gone to buy school shoes and the shopkeeper, after spending a good 15 minutes in the store room, came out with a pair of shoes. Size was mine; the shoe type though, was unfortunately male!!

As a kid I would wear only jeans n tees, had short hair, a cricket bat and ball in hand, and could forever be heard yelling "catcheeet!!" (this while playing with a bunch of boys). Actually I used to feel very proud if someone mistook me for a boy. You see, I was quite a tom boy. ;) On picnics, while the adults sat and... umm .. did whatever adults do on picnics, we, the bachcha party would wander off in a group to explore, climb trees, rocks, everything. I still take pride in the fact that I often managed to climb faster and higher than the boys my age - and then teased them.

Subtract the bunch of boys and the cricket bat. Add a few inches to the height, a few extra pounds and some more... and you've got...ME! Still with short hair, but not a tom boy any more. [This is where people who know me should keep shut..!] So, that's me people! A *ahem* normal and *ahem ahem* average 'girl' ... if you discount the fact that I was notoriously popular in school for not wearing a hairband!

PS: Doubts cleared? No?? Check my profile. It says "Female". And then go check Trinaa's posts and comments where she constantly talks about me with words like "she" and "her". That should do it.

Notice the extensive use of emoticons?? Lately, my brother and I have been having conversations like these. Most of them don't make sense. Courtesy TWO people with a mental age of 14 [;)] , but they're so much fun [:D]. Using smileys is a nice break from the usual i-am-fine-how-are-you conversations plus it requires minimal energy usage [:P]

Wishing you smiley conversations !! [:) :D :P]

Breaking Out

I am a (proud) member of the debating society in my college and it happens to be the ONE place where we get to do something productive and, as the motto says, "break out" of our shells.

This weekend, we organized an event and it was a super hit! The response from the participants was overwhelming :) and the sponsors were glad that their money was put to good use ;) ... but most of all WE had the time of our lives :D . Planning, changing, sponsors, permissions, organising, t-shirts, sound systems, managing students, addressing queries, free food, frooti, and a fun-loving, joke-cracking society - they all fit together perfectly!

I thought I would never get to say this, but college isn't all that bad ;)

Of Crushes and Cakes

What do two crazy friends do when they meet to celebrate a special someone's birthday?

a) bake a cake
b) have Maggi
c) cook
d) sigh over past/present/future crushes
e) all of the above

Happy Birthday Ranbir! (28-09-2008)
please marry my friend...please??

Awards, Quotes and Tags

I got an award! yayy !! I got an award !!! - from Mayuri and Trinaa, both of whom have written some fantastic things for me *beaming smile* :

Mayuri says: "she is one heck of a blogger..and like tinni...a complete whacko.!!..We do crazy things together and i absolutely love it!..Way to go HP...!!"

Trinaa says: "my bestest friend.. She is an awesome photographer and has a brilliant eye for details…and can summarize incidents in a shade of humour that I suspect she has probably invented herself ;D… Love you for all that hp.."

Guys, I'm overwhelmed. Thanks ! :)

... the award comes with some rules:

1. The winner may put the logo on his/her blog.
2. Put a link to the person you received the award from.
3. Nominate 5 blogs.
4. Put links to the blogs.
5. Leave a message for your nominees.

I nominate (and tag with the Quotations Tag below):

Urv: An amazing blogger and a FRIENDS fanatic like me. He's disappeared for a while but hopefully should be back soon.

Mayuri
: Don't call me stupid for giving it back to you. You deserve it - coz you're awesome.

Trinaa: Same goes for you. Thanks for being there for me - both on the internet and off it. :)

Stupidosaur: He writes hilarious stuff and has inspired me to post one of my own PJs.

Scriblers Inc: He's brilliant! I love the spooky stuff he writes.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Trinaa tagged me again with The Quotations Tag where I have to write quotes from my favourite books.

(I have mentioned my obsession with quotes on a previous post. You have been warned.)

ATLAS SHRUGGED
- Ayn Rand

1. Whatever we are, its we who move the world and its we who'll pull it through.

2. What greater wealth is there than to own your life and to spend it on growing?

3. I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

4. "Hi, Slug." - "Hi, Frisco."

THE FOUNTAINHEAD
- Ayn Rand

1. I've taught you a great deal and nothing. No one can teach you anything, not at the core, at the source of it. What you're doing - its yours. I can give you the means, but the aim - the aim's your own.

2. Howard Roark built a temple to the human spirit. He saw man as strong, proud, clean, wise and fearless. He saw man as a heroic being. And he built a temple to that.

3. We never need to say anything to each other when we're together. This is for the time we won't be together. I love you.

CALVIN AND HOBBES
- Bill Watterson

1. Valuable minutes are disappearing forever even as we speak!! We've got to have more fun !!

2. Each moment I should be able to say, "I'm having the time of my life right now!"

3. Things are never quite as scary when you've got a best friend.

4. Moms and reasons are like oil and water

HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY
- Douglas Adams

1. It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons.

2. Look, would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?

3. I think fish is nice, but then I think rain is wet, so who am I to judge?

4. All this way, all this trouble, all this not-lying-on-the-beach-having-a-wonderful-time, and for what?

5. "Out", he said. People who can supply that amount of firepower don't need to supply verbs as well.

Think Tank
, if you don't mind, I'd like you to do the Quotes tag - coz i know you've read tens of thousands of books. Do it if you feel like. ;)
--------------------------------------------------------------

PS: I have another tag due. But all in good time, my friends...all in good time. ;)

Teachers' Day...

..came ... and went ... and nothing happened...!
Where were the celebrations?? We didn't even have the day off in college..! Maybe its not that shocking .. but I had forgotten that we don't get a holiday for Teachers' Day and was really getting excited about finally getting a holiday! :P
In school, we used to start practicing for the program several days in advance. It would be the class 9 students who organised a major part of the event - taking charge of the entire senior section – apart from class 10s who had their own special contribution. During our time in class 9, we chose the theme "Julius Caesar", which after all the twists and turns, became "Shakespeare in India" - a play that had all the characters of Julius Caesar, plus Kalidas, Shakuntala and Jankinath a.k.a. Jackey a.k.a. Trinaa !! The twist involved Brutus and Caesar falling in love with Shakuntala who was in love with Jackey, Calpurnia eloping with Marc Antony (played by yours truly), and Caesar waking from the dead and delivering killer Devdas dialogs. Some other 'killer' parts were: "Yes! My best friend, Julius Caesar!!" - Brutus' line inspired by the famous 'Friendly Wash Detergent' ad. (Do you remember it?)... and Calpurnia singing "Radha kaise na jale" on getting whiff of Caesar's love for Shakuntala.
Now that I think about it, it was almost a Bollywood masala flick with generous doses of heroes, heroines, love, jealousy, villains, wars, songs, 'inspirations' and awesomistic dialogs.

30-06-2007 08-18-32_0039d_resize
The spirit during that phase is truly memorable... - theme discussions. ideas. twists. actors. songs. dances. costumes. announcements. money. gifts. shorter classes. zero periods. the shed (the ultimate practise place). hushing up if we saw a teacher. whispering ideas when a teacher was around. fooling around. coming to school on off days for practice. dress rehearsals. staying back for decorating the hall. staff room. practice. practice. and more practice. things still messed up on the final day.... sigh .. how I missed all of this and much more...
oh wonderful school days ... I miss you ..!!

Kya tha, kya se kya ho gaya-aa-aa

Have you ever argued upon something you had absolutely no idea about and later had your point proved right? Its a nice feeling getting your (logically derived) point across and then proving it even though you hardly knew anything about the topic of discussion when it actually took place...no? [- no don’t answer just now! you'll know why I’m saying this after you've read the whole post.]

In school we had loads of fun. And not just loads. Loads and loads and loads and load and.... you get the idea, right?

So…yes. We had loads of fun. We enjoyed so much that I was totally convinced that that was the most fun anyone could ever have. And all this fun I 'blame' on the school and the friends I was with. No other place would have been as heavenly and no other friends as much fun. It was bliss!! Total unadulterated bliss!

Sometimes, in between this bliss, came people who said college life would be even more fun. This is what I argued against. "College life?? Fun?? without this school and these friends?? Nah, I don't believe you" – and this was when they gave a knowing smile and said: "You'll know when you go to college." – and this was where I would argue even more adamantly, with the same points, give up, and then start dreading the school leaving day.

The day finally came. And much as we didn’t want to, we were forced to pass-out…

Then there was a new school … and I passed out …both, in shock and, eventually, from the school. This school will require another post. Another time.

…and then I came to college. People would ask me “Which college?” – and I'd tell them – and they’d go – “Oooh !!” – If only they knew … I go “oooooh” to convey a very different emotion every day at 7a.m. when I realize I have to attend college again! Boring. (and an adverb for added emphasis) Terribly boring.

There are people in this college who call themselves “friends”. Outside, I smile a trying-to-approve smile, and nod... Inside, I’m mostly rolling on the floor, laughing… and at other times wishing they knew friendship as I know it – be rid of their wrong notion once and for all, and not embarrass themselves.

So we come back to my first point again. It’s a nice feeling when you are later proved right…no? NO ! – Not when your point is as depressing as mine.

The only satisfaction that I now have is that I can safely use my favorite sentence of four words. “I AM ALWAYS RIGHT

PS: The good thing(s) about college will come in another post.

First Tag - Unspectacular Quirks

Trinaa continues to keep her life simple while, very conveniently, making mine complicated with this tag.

Rules of the tag:
1. Link the person who tagged you (did)
2. Mention the rules on your blog (doing it now)
3. Tell 6 unspectacular quirks of yours (don't want to. am i not too perfect for this?... Wait..did someone say 'no'?)
4. Tag 6 following bloggers by linking them (don't even know those many bloggers. what a fix!)
5. Leave a comment on each of the tagged bloggers' blog, letting them know that they have been tagged. (that will be easy :) )

So.. here goes..

1. I like quotations . . I like them to the point where they have become an obsession for me .. and annoyance for my friends. I write them everywhere...letters, diaries, black boards, note books, blogs, bits of paper...everywhere. And i also use them while talking. . . so much so that if i come up with an intelligent one liner (don't be shocked. it happens once in a while) my friends tell me to say something original for a change!! This reminds me, i know a quote to describe a quote-maniac like me : "She had a pretty gift for quotation, which is a serviceable substitute for wit." - W. Somerset Maugham

2. I HAVE to cover books before a start reading them. Doesn't matter who the book belongs to. I even cover books borrowed from the library. Hows that for being possessive about books ?

3. I bite my nails. Four root canal treatments and strong advice from the doctor to be careful could not deter me.

4. I eat a lot . . . a lot...and mostly junk food - Maggi, chocolates... The crabbier i am, the more i (feel like) eat(ing). . . Sometimes i think i might have the Binge Eating Disorder. But i don't feel guilty about it later so i probably don't ;)

5. I have to carry a hankie whenever i leave home. Even if I'm only going to the stationery shop next door. Also, they have to be of a special size - not too big, not too small.

6. I crack loads of jokes, most of which come under the category of "trying-to-be-funny" and "poor". ( what? you knew this form my previous posts? )

I tag the only few blogging people i know (and thank Tinni for not tagging them first)
1. Aditya
2. Ankur Bhaiya
3. Farah
4. Mayuri
5 & 6. - any unfortunate fellow blogger who happens to chance upon my blog - or visits deliberately - hey you! you are tagged!

...until the next post... May the Force be with you. :)

:O

Dear Google,

I think it is plain rude to give a word verification like this one to a staunch vegetarian. I am offended. . .deeply.

Shoe Shot

As a part of our college curriculum, we have to join a company for a summer training program after the fourth semester....and i have joined this awesome office of Coal India Limited. Its campus is considered one of the best in Eastern India. Inside, everything is spic and span...and there is pin drop silence ... well most of the time... except when i walk! Yes yes, that's exactly what u read "when i walk". But don't get wrong impression! I might be "plump" but i don't go THUMP-THUMP when walking. i go Squeak-Squeak....damn shoes on marble floors! I tried walking slowly, tried walking on my heels - all it did was give me a funny walk and strained muscles. Tried walking on my toes next - that did reduce the noise - now its was squaek - squeak.. but how long could my poor toes take my wieght? i came home frustrated...put those unfaithful shoes in a box and vowed never to put them on again. The next day i wore a different pair and walked in to the office very confidently... and guess who walked in with me ?? SQUEEEK !! SQUEEEK!!!

damnit!

Do YOU read the BIG Blog ??

When Amitabh Bachchan started a blog about 2 months back, the whole blogosphere came alive with this news. That big a person using this medium to voice his thoughts was certainly a big deal for all his blogospheric fans. I, for one, immediately subscribed to his feeds – BIG MISTAKE !!

The first post titled “My First Day on the Blog” was quickly followed by another one called “Day 2 on the blog” the very next day . . .and I wondered how he takes out time to write such long post from his “busy” schedule.

The next day, to my utter bewilderment, came another post, titled, yet again, “Day 3” ! ( He’s new, I thought. Will learn to put suitable titles on the posts. ) But on the same day, there were innumerable posts containing interviews to various newspapers, magazines, etc. ( Who reads those many posts on one day ?? . . . let alone write them ?? . . and I accept I didn’t read them . . but what was the point??)

And then came

Day 4

..

Day 5

..

Day 6

..

.. you get the point

..

..Day 28

..

..(Man, this guy doesn’t need a break! . . . why?!!?)

..

..a new article every day – each one sending “much love” to the readers.

..and as if one post a day wasn’t enough, there were days with posts like Day 31, Day 31(i), Day 31(ii) !!

This again continued for a while until tragedy struck – the real pain in the you-know-where – mobile blogging !! (AAARRGHH !!) Random updates of what he was doing, profuse apologies for not posting, and of course, “MUCH LOVE” and its wagging tail, were posted every 2 hours.

“Rushing to airport. Apologies blog partially written. Dozed off. Will complete on set in Mumbai. Love and more.”

“Finally in Mehboob. ! Rushing with wig and make up . . . And then convert to the Genie for Aladin. . Love”

“ In the loo for morning potty . . . constipated.”

(Ok..ok..i made up that last one . . .)

Then again, there was a recent post that contained the names of everyone who had commented – in alphabetical order!! You won’t believe me but my computer actually hung while attempting to open that page. Even machines are protesting now. . . humans lost their patience long back . . .

If I remember correctly, Mr.Bachchan once claimed to be a great fan of Aamir Khan. Well Mr.B, you certainly haven’t noticed how often he blogs. His readers actually WAIT for his next post. In your case, sir, we are waiting for a teeny weeny little pause in your never ending blogging spree. We all love you Bachchan ji, but we don’t . . . I repeat, DON’T want minute by minute updates!

As soon as I post this, I’m going to head to my Google Reader to unsubscribe from his blog. I’d rather be content with news articles like these:

(PS: Apologies to anyone out there reading, for the delay in posting. And yes, much love.)

A hilarious trip (if u understand what i mean)

My recently concluded road trip across Gujarat and Rajasthan taught me a lot - how different their language is from ours, their special embroidery, some bits about their culture, what (yummy) food they have, how they live in the scorching heat...how to differentiate between a Gujarati and a Rajasthani, etc. etc. I sure would have loved to write all about it but a certain friend of mine writes so awesomely well that i have an inferiority complex now. So instead, i'm leaving you photos of all the funny things i saw...

On Father's Day

I took a sip from Dad's drink and said : I'm going to become a drunkard when i grow up.
Dad smirked and said : At least you will become something!

He got a Father's day present today...not from me tho. His paintings somehow got printed in today's newspaper.

if you're born, its too late (??)

some time back, i was thinking how much my life has changed. how much i have changed... and how much apparently better off, but actually worse off i am from what i used to be.
but then (the great optimist that i am) it dawned upon me that there are so many people whose lives change drastically... within moments.. for the worse.. through absolutely no fault of their own. and then, as the case always is with life, they have to accept it...for a while at least, before they can start to struggle all over again with the risk of losin it all. and i realised, that compared to them im so much better off - even with my tooth aches. (that is saying a lot, mind you!). i'm with my family - tho i miss some people a lot. and still in touch with almost everyone that i wanted to be in touch with - all my friends :). (thank you Airtel for lowering STD rates!) we meet up as often as we can for whatever little time and compensate for the fun we could have had but did not during the rest of the year spent apart... and are just HAPPY for those few moments.
all this essentially sums up my life as quite a good one comparatively, doesnt it ? hmm... yeah.

but then again (the typical crab that i am) i wondered, is life comparative?? is it like a CAT - where your percentile depends on how much better or worse several thousand other candidates perform? is my happiness proportional to the misery of other people? do other people have to suffer for me to be 'happy' ? is happiness scarce? - small unequal shares to be distributed among everyone? (i got a bigger piece, yay!) is it not absolute ? and whatever happened to karma ?!?

i've been a good kid - i got presents from Santa every year till i believed in him. and even now, tho im crazy a lot of times, i'm sure Santa would still put me on the "nice" list.
so, what have i done to deserve all these changes? what have i done to grow up so soon, turn 18 ?? and more importantly, WHAT have i done to deserve turnin twenty this year ??!??! (couldnt it be TwenTEEN ??!! please God(s), pleeeez !!)
no, i am not going to take 'i was BORN' as an answer…
even if i do, what about the happiness problem ?

Careful. We don't want to learn from this.*

"make new friends, but don't forget old,
new is silver, old is gold."

how many times have we come across this quote? several times? and yet, how much attention have we actually paid to it? maybe, for the first time - yes.. it did make sense. after that it became common.. innumerable text msgs, emails, scraps, from new friends, even unknown people, saying the same thing... a few words added / replaced dont make a difference to the essence of the lines. we came across them frequently enough to stop taking pains to even read the second line. it was enough for us to know that we'd read it once. "we know what it says, why bother?" very true...

but then we forgot the idea of Old being Gold.
the philosophy of "why bother?" became much easier to follow....

Knights' night

as the hour hand inched towards the 7 o clock mark, i was wondering if IPL would be anything more than an over hyped, money generating tournament. turns out it WAS all that - with a good amount of cricket ! there was a total of over 300 runs scored ! two-thirds of that being scored by the winning team... and never-seen-before economy rates of under 3 per over. whoever said that was impossible in a T20 game ?!?

the opening ceremony was among the most brilliant ones i have seen with Ravi Shastri surpassing his own brilliance as commentator and host.

as the match progressed, it was clear that the only thing that had gone in favour of the Bangalore Royal Challengers was the toss. from there, the Kolkata Knight Riders had it all their way.

Being put to bat by the captain of Royal Challengers, Rahul Dravid, the Knights made the highest total in a T20 match, for the loss of only 3 wickets as Brendon Mccullum showered the ecstatic crowd with 13 sixes, scoring a massive 158 - the highest individual score in a T20 game.
in reply, the Challengers barely managed to make 80 odd runs, almost a fourth of which were scored as extras.

the knight riders, despite the extras and mis fields, made a brilliant performance as Dada lead from the front taking a few wickets himself. Shah Rukh Khan and his bollywood brigade did their part in cheering the team... without them IPL would be .. ICL !!

the first match of the tournament was a great watch but the other teams sure have a very high standard to live up to ! and crowds - storming the stadium, roaring for more action - don't make it any easier.

i wonder why all big tournaments take place when i have exams!!...and why a great shah rukh khan fan dint go to see the match.... goes to show that some things never change .. and some other things.. well, they change even if u've never thought they could...

PS: i hated how MAX showed ads as soon as the over got over !!.. not even letting the commentator finish his sentence ! tsk tsk..

Finally !

after much contemplation...finally! a blog !
and i decide to call it Pop - after the wonderful sound hydrogen makes while burning.
